Hey Hannibal fans. It’s no news that our show might be on the edge of being cancelled- and I’ve seen a ton of people trying to get their friends to watch, which is great! Here’s a reminder to people outside of the USA that by getting this extension for chrome (totally free and safe) you can bypass your country’s restrictions and use Hulu to contribute to the show’s ratings. Which is awesome.

However, we can do more. I’m usually not one to spout the “you have the power!” kind of talk, but in this situation we seriously do. Despite low ratings, Friday Night Lights had five seasons, because fans organized a facebook group and petition to keep the show on air, sending lightbulbs to the network executives. “Roswell” fans sent in bottles of Tabasco sauce (a favorite of one of the show’s characters), and fans of “Jericho” sent CBS 20 tons of peanuts. Holy shit. And these things worked.

So obviously, the first thing we should all do is send emails. Go here and select Hannibal, and write NBC an email talking about why the show should stay on air and how passionate the fanbase is. For the love of God, do not threaten them or make cannibal jokes in the email. Be professional. If we all send them letters, we can sway the tides and help Hannibal stay on air.

And I believe we can do more. As shows like Roswell and Jericho used gimmicks to keep their shows on air, we too can come together and organize such fan campaigns. How about mailing the network mass quantities of gummy feet and eyeballs? Or making a video showing Hannibal fans across the world? I have created a Facebook group and blog to help organize these events.

By coming together, I am positive that we can keep this show on air for the seven seasons Bryan Fuller intended for it, goddammit. The Hannibal fandom isn’t only one of the fastest growing and passionate I have ever seen on tumblr, it is also one of the most intelligent, mature, and creative. But I can’t do this by myself.

Something that I really wanted to add about Elementary v. Sherlock that’s really important to remember when keeping them both in the context of the books is the characterisation of Holmes;

In canon, Holmes was not an asshole. He sometimes screwed up, because he’s peculiar and brilliant and has a bit (ha ha) of an ego, but if he offended someone he cares about (not just Watson, but clients & near-strangers who didn’t deserve the abuse), he regrets it.
He has a massive heart; it’s half the reason he solves crimes.

Sherlock doesn’t seem to even touch Sherlock’s humanity outside of John.
Elementary handles it brilliantly. Sherlock has a heart, and while he often steels himself, he is very much human. And when Sherlock screws up, Watson holds him accountable for it.

I have nothing against Elementary, but may I just remind you - Sherlock is an asshole, because Sherlock is canonically an asshole. He was described as being cold, dispassionate and arrogant - not kind.

From ‘The Adventure of the Three Garridebs’, when Watson is shot: “For the first time, I had a glimpse of a great heart as well as a great brain.”

From ‘The Adventure of the Six Napoleons’, when Lestrade pays Holmes a sincere and heartfelt compliment : “And as he turned away, it seemed he was more nearly moved by the softer human emotions than I had ever seen him.”

From ‘The Problem of Thor Bridge’, when a rich client explains how he tried to seduce his children’s governess: “this young lady was in a sense under your protection…you have tried to ruin a defenseless girl who was under your roof. Some of you rich men have to be taught that all the world cannot be bribed into condoning your offenses.”

From ‘The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger’, after hearing the tragic story of a woman whose face was mauled by a lion; “Then Holmes stretched out his long arm and patted her hand with such a show of sympathy as I had seldom known him to exhibit, ‘Poor girl!’ he said, ‘Poor girl! The ways of fate are indeed hard to understand. If there is not some compensation hereafter, then the world is a cruel jest’ “

From ‘The Adventure of the Speckled Band’, when speaking with a client whose father is physically abusive: “Five little livid spots, the marks of four fingers and a thumb, were printed upon the white wrist. ‘You have been cruelly used,’ said Holmes.”

Also, in “The Adventure of Abbey Grange,” he helps a young man escape, who intervened to prevent an alcoholic aristocrat from beating his wife.

In “The Adventure of the Second Stain”, Holmes goes out of his way to shield Lady Hilda from her husband’s anger, even though the husband was Holmes’ client.

In “The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle” he lets a pathetic petty criminal go free because he doesn’t think making him a ‘jailbird’ will help.

There are many other instances of Holmes showing kindness, empathy and even breaking the law to help people gain justice.

Other phrases and words Watson uses to describe Holmes at various times:

“quiet, genial.”

“without a harshness, which was foreign to his nature.”

“he had a remarkable gentleness and courtesy in his dealings with women.”

Holmes may have displayed a certain impatience for social affectation, but he maintains a strong moral compass and asserts this fact several times, in various situations, towards various people.

This idea that Holmes is a “sociopathic” asshole is quite a contemporary reading and, might I add, a lazy one that’s as ignorant of mental illness as it is offensive to those of us who’re tired of white men getting to stomp all over people in the name of ‘genius’ and ‘anti-hero’ status. BBC Sherlock’s reading of Holmes is one that’s built on popular cultural tropes, and succeeds because of it. ‘Elementary’ reads Holmes with a fuller attention to the complexities of his character.

Anytime someone says ‘well Holmes is an asshole’ as a conclusive fact, I know that your canon knowledge is either limited or deliberately misinterpreted.

Do some re-reading.

This is my fifteen year old sister, Hannah. She has a cyst on her pineal gland, which is in the middle of her brain. (From what I understand, a cyst is like a tumor but filled with liquid.) We’ve known about it for about two years, and it constantly gives her horrific headaches, that can last weeks. Her vision is getting very bad because of it too, and so is her quality of life, she’s started fainting and had a couple seizures recently. Just last week we had a Skype conference with one of the two neurosurgeons, in the world, who would potentially perform the surgery to remove it. (A lot of people have trouble getting this surgery approved, but because Hannah’s is one of the largest cysts in one of the youngest patients, it was approved.) Praise God. The surgery will take place in June, but only if we can pay the $50,000. We really need help raising this money.

This is ALEX, who goes by NOWHERE MAN on Facebook. He is THIRTY YEARS OLD and attends SCA events, attends anime conventions, and hangs out in the Delmar Loop. He is POTENTIALLY ARMED and owns an assortment of weapons including KNIVES, BOWS, SWORDS, DAGGERS, ETC. He is a GUN RIGHTS ACTIVIST and I have reason to believe he OWNS SEVERAL FIREARMS. This past weekend at Anime St. Louis I made the mistake of letting this guy stay in a room I had available. During the convention he sexually harassed NO FEWER THAN THREE TEENAGERS. His targets seem to be 16-18 YEAR OLD CISGIRLS, TRANSGUYS, OR ANDROGYNOUS PEOPLE, particularly those who are THIN ENOUGH THAT HE COULD OVERPOWER THEM.

He has been STALKING one person since JANUARY, including sending them harassing messages, telling others that they are dating and referring to them as both his girlfriend and his “ex,” using emotional manipulation to convince them not to tell anyone, and then CLAIMING THAT THEIR FATHER THREATENED TO KILL HIM when all that was said was to basically stay the fuck away from his kid. He spent half the convention crying to us about how he is HEARTBROKEN that the teenager he’s stalking IS DATING SOMEONE ELSE.

He took TWO DIFFERENT GIRLS to his [my] hotel room, that he was SHARING WITH MY TWO COWORKERS, and fucked them both while my coworkers were at the con doing filming work — essentially ALLOWING TWO STRANGERS INTO A ROOM WITH OUR CAMERA EQUIPMENT.

He FELT UP A TEENAGER’S THIGH AND GRINDED UP AGAINST HER during the Saturday night rave/dance and WOULD NOT STOP WHEN SHE SAID SHE WAS UNCOMFORTABLE.

He REFUSED TO STOP TOUCHING/POKING/HUGGING my 17 year old friend and got REALLY WHINY when we told him to FUCKING STOP IT.

Please stay the fuck away from him. If he so much as sets foot ANYWHERE the fuck near Promstuck I will CALL THE GODDAMN COPS.

Please, please, if your parents are willing to come help chaperone promstuck and be security, I need their help.

Can Town is a safe space. This is absolutely beyond unacceptable and he will not be allowed anywhere near our space.

There is a trend in media for strong women who are outwardly so. They are witty, snarky, toned, and know how to hold a gun. The role model being pushed is that of the ultimate woman. It’s progress – I wouldn’t trade River Song for a hundred people from Hollywood’s past – but there’s a silent repercussion, a fortification of the idea that women have to be twice as accomplished to be considered half as good, to deserve this screen time at all. They are always extraordinary, always the one in a million. Importantly, there’s no variety – only one mould to fit ourselves into. A great mould, yes, but not if you don’t fit into it.

Molly Hooper is different. Molly Hooper is kind, thoughtful, always smiling, and intelligent in a way that you don’t really notice until you remember she’s a pathologist. She asks after people and cares about the answers, remembers little details because everything someone says is important. She probably still remembers how Sherlock likes his coffee. Her blog is pink, covered in kittens, and uses Comic Sans. She blunders her way through speaking, has serious foot-in-mouth syndrome, and can’t put on a pair of plastic gloves without making faces. She is one of the strongest women I have ever seen.

She puts up with what can only be described as “total bullshit.” You might say that makes her a bit of a doormat, but for people like Molly (like me), who like kindness and hate conflict, it takes serious guts to call someone on their behaviour and say you’re hurting me. It takes guts to carry that kind of unrequited love and still first and foremost be a friend, to ask what do you need? Molly Hooper makes Sherlock Holmes, a man who can barely articulate anything beyond the scientific, try to be kinder. In the end, Molly isn’t the woman who counts [like Irene Adler], but the friend.

How about I list all the characters he’s written/created that either go through with, or intend, to have the doctor meet her as a young child, then go back and be sexually involved/attracted to her as an adult.

Rose- Turns out, the original plan (Devised by Paul Abbott) was to have the Doctor influence Rose’s life from the start; this was changed later on, either because it was turned into a love story and thus changed to make it less creepy, or two, because it always was a love story and someone pointed out how creepy it was. The only writer who didn’t erase references to the meta? Moffat. (“Red bicycle when you were 12”.)

Sally Sparrow: In the original Ninth Doctor short story “What I Did On My Christmas Holidays by Sally Sparrow”, which Moffat wrote for the 2006 Annual and that he then re-worked into the episode “Blink”, she was a 12-year-old girl. In the end, it turns out that the Doctor only got into contact with her because he met her older self first - a spy on mission in ‘exotic’ Istanbul, whom the Doctor calls “beautiful” and an “amazing woman” in front of the girl.

Amy, River, and Clara are all obvious examples that I don’t need to go into detail for. Shorthand: CREEPY AS FUCK, sexualizes young girls to an extent, CREEPY AS FUCK. (This particular information/certain sections of summary comes from here)

“Your wife turns into a boat, and shortly after that, you never sleep again and you clean shit off someone. It doesn’t seem like a very appealing prospect. Obviously, the moment I saw my child, that was different, but up until that point, I was thinking, ‘how long before she gets back to normal size? You cannot BACKWARDS RATIONALIZE THIS BULLSHIT. You cannot inundate women with the idea that their sole reason for existence is a male and then shame them and say all that they want to do is hunt for men, that they are dependent upon them. You can’t say that it’s okay that you write utterly dependent, sexualized females because that’s what women are like. I just— that’s not what women are like.

I’ve never watched Doctor Who, but I’ve noticed the article this quote is sourced to is talking about a 17th century courtesan the Doctor is in love with. Is Amy Pond a stripper? Coupled with Irene Adler, how many of Moffat’s supposedly “strong” female characters are also sex workers? There’s nothing wrong with this, per se, except for the fact that it’s a fixation, it sexualizes his women and makes their jobs and bodies performative (sex work does not necessarily do this, but after seeing his work in Scandal I’m really not interested in giving him the benefit of the doubt anymore), and it pulls into broad daylight this perverse association that to be worth your narrative while, women have to be flirty and sexy on top of intelligent and clever.

Sexuality can be used in positive, interesting, feminist ways: because women can never actually escape patriarchy, some of fiction’s most interesting characters have resigned themselves to it and learned to harness it to their advantage. This is cool. This is almost done with Irene, except when it’s not, when Irene “falls in love” with Sherlock (as women do) and it serves as her downfall. When her entire character dissolves from cleverness and surprise into blatant, simple seduction. When that becomes her only strength.

What disgusts me most about the implication of the quote - other than the visceral obvious - is that it all but outright says that men are happier without women, and women are happier with them. Men strive to achieve their goals independently, and a woman’s only goal is to obtain a man. Jesus christ it makes me want to riP MY SCALP OFF. THIS MAN IS A HUGELY INFLUENTIAL HAND IN BRITISH TV
